The 15th annual Hog Olympics were held Friday at Heritage High School. "It’s the only chance all summer that the big guy's get to show their stuff," said Ray Barron, a coach at Heritage and the organizer of the yearly event.

The competition included five-man teams divided into two pools from Arvada West, Columbine, Douglas County and Heritage in pool One and Ponderosa, Chaparral, Dakota Ridge and a second Heritage team in pool two.

It also featured some of Colorado's top big men in Cody Sanders (Heritage), Terry Alletto (Ponderosa), Niko Mendez (Douglas County), Mark McKinnon (Dakota Ridge) and Bryce Schwindt (Columbine), along with many others.

A question always asked in a CFI interview, what do you bench? And the event started in the weight room where Schwindt broke the Hog record with 44 Reps at 185 pounds in the bench press and also helped the Rebels break the team record of 120 Reps with their five guys.

"I really wanted to break Curtis’ record," Schwindt said referring to the previous record of 40 set by last year’s teammate Curtis Cunningham, now with CU. "I have worked hard all year with that goal in mind."

Mike Griebel head coach of Heritage was asked what he liked better, the 7-on-7's or this?

"This is football, this is the nuts and bolts, this is football where the big guys get to show their stuff."

Casey Coons head coach of Arvada West added, "I just love this, it's the big boys doing their thing."

The event then moved outside for the tire toss where the hogs had to grab a regular sized car tire and throw it with two hands in a discuss-style throw. The winner of that event was Heritage one and the best individual throw was Cody Sanders with a toss of 37' 1".

The third event was the tire flip where the Hogs had to flip a very large tractor tire end over end 15 yards in a relay competition with Columbine breaking another hog record with a time of 1:26.20.

The next event was the TNT relay where the five-man teams had to carry a wrestling dummy weighing 85 pounds over 20 yards and hand it off to another teammate and race back and forth. The winner of that event was Chaparral with a time of 22:05.

Next the Hogs had to show off the muscle with the team tug of war with Columbine winning there pool with a 3-0 record and Heritage finished as the winner in their pool play with a 2-1 record.

The finale then moved to the parking lot for the truck push, where the five team members had to push a truck up a hill 75 yards. Chaparral once again cleaned up winning that event in a time of 52:40.

"There is just no way to train for something like this," said Vinney Rosa of Arvada West.

"It just takes everything out of you in the truck push, I thought I was going to die," added teammate Grant Engle.

Columbine won the event for the third year in a row and head coach Andy Lowery said, "The kids just love this and it is the highlight of the summer for the Hogs."
